Many clients would like to obtain lawful UAE residence status, but they do not necessarily want to buy real estate, invest a large amount into a business, or become employed by a local company. What they often need is not a “visa for the sake of a visa”, but a practical and defensible structure: UAE residence visa, Emirates ID, a clear explanation of their connection with the UAE, and a set of documents that can be used for banking, compliance and international structuring purposes.
In such cases, a full UAE company may not always be necessary. For certain clients, a more appropriate route may be a freelance or professional permit, which can support the process of obtaining a UAE residence visa and Emirates ID. This structure may be particularly suitable for consultants, independent professionals, IT specialists, owners of international assets and entrepreneurs at an early stage, where a full free zone company would be excessive.
The main advantage of this solution is that it may involve a lighter administrative burden. The client obtains lawful residence status in the UAE, but does not automatically take on all the obligations usually associated with maintaining a full corporate structure: company accounting, corporate tax registration, corporate filings and annual company administration.
There is also an important tax point which is often overlooked. According to the UAE Federal Tax Authority, a natural person is subject to UAE Corporate Tax only if they conduct a business or business activity in the UAE and the total turnover from such business or business activities exceeds AED 1 million within the calendar year. Wages, personal investment income and real estate investment income are not considered business or business activities for this purpose.
In practical terms, this means that, subject to the facts of the case, a person operating under a freelance or professional permit may not be required to register for UAE Corporate Tax if the relevant turnover does not exceed the AED 1 million threshold. For many clients, this removes a significant administrative concern: they do not need to immediately create and maintain a full company, file corporate tax returns or run a corporate structure simply in order to obtain residence status.
This does not mean that there are “no taxes” or that compliance can be ignored. Each case must be reviewed individually. The nature of the activity, source of income, place where work is actually performed, expected turnover, possible VAT implications, banking requirements and available supporting documents all need to be considered before choosing the structure.
We treat this solution not as a “visa product”, but as a UAE residence, Emirates ID and light compliance solution. In its basic form, the client is assisted with selecting the appropriate free zone and permit type, applying for a freelance or professional permit, completing the visa process, medical test, biometrics, Emirates ID application, basic medical insurance and related procedural steps.
For clients who want to understand their tax position in advance, we add a separate tax review. At this stage, we assess whether Corporate Tax registration may be required, whether the AED 1 million threshold is relevant, whether VAT issues may arise, and whether the client should keep at least a basic file of financial and supporting documents for banking or personal compliance purposes.
A further layer is banking readiness. A UAE residence visa and Emirates ID may be helpful in a bank’s KYC process, but they do not guarantee account opening and they do not replace a proper banking file. A bank may ask for proof of address, source of funds, source of wealth, description of activities, CV, income documents and a clear explanation of the client’s economic connection with the UAE. We therefore prepare a banking profile, source of funds / source of wealth summary, review the documents actually available to the client and explain the type of questions that may be raised by a bank’s compliance department.
The address question also needs to be handled carefully. For banking and other compliance procedures, a visa alone may not be enough. Depending on the purpose, the client may need proof of address: a residential lease, Ejari, utility bill, bank statement or another acceptable document. We do not provide artificial addresses and we do not promise that any document will be accepted by a bank. Our role is to identify a lawful and explainable option that corresponds to the client’s real circumstances.
As a result, the solution can be structured at different levels. Some clients only need the basic residence package: freelance or professional permit, residence visa, Emirates ID, medical test, biometrics and insurance. Others need the same package with a tax review, in order to understand whether Corporate Tax registration may arise. If the objective is banking-related, it is sensible to add banking readiness: document review, client profile, source of funds explanation and address proof analysis. For clients who want ongoing support, annual compliance care can be added: renewal reminders, AED 1 million threshold monitoring, VAT review and updating documents for banks.
This solution is not suitable for everyone. If the client intends to operate a full business in the UAE, hire staff, enter into regular contracts, open a corporate bank account and scale an operating business, then a regular free zone or mainland company may be the better option. A freelance or professional permit is a lighter structure for cases where the client needs residence status and Emirates ID without an unnecessary corporate framework.
We assist clients with this process in a practical and careful way: selecting the right jurisdiction, arranging the permit and visa process, reviewing the tax position, preparing the banking file and explaining the limitations in advance. This helps avoid false expectations. The client understands what exactly they receive, which obligations may arise, and where the possibilities of a UAE residence visa end.
If you need a lawful UAE residence visa and Emirates ID without real estate investment, employment or unnecessary corporate administration, we can review your case and suggest the appropriate route.
